Some of my favourite sessions aren’t the ones planned months in advance with a detailed shot list. They’re the ones that start with a simple phone call and a really thoughtful idea.

That’s exactly how this session came to be.

I received a call from a lovely woman in Chicago who wanted to surprise her cousin, Karina, with a 30th birthday portrait session. It was such a thoughtful gift, and from the moment we started planning, I knew this was going to be a special evening.

We met at the beautiful Rockway Gardens in Kitchener, and everything came together perfectly.

A Surprise Birthday Gift from Chicago

Every session is a little different, and I love adding meaningful details that tell your story. For Karina, that meant birthday balloons, a cake, number candles… and of course, her adorable little pup!

Then came the puppy kisses…

Between the lush gardens, charming stonework, beautiful bridges, fountains, and winding pathways, there are endless little pockets that create a timeless backdrop without feeling overly busy. It offers incredible variety in one location, which makes it perfect for celebrating a milestone like this.

Karina’s soft, neutral dress paired beautifully with all the greenery, and the gardens gave us the perfect balance of elegant portraits and fun, candid moments.
