Extended Family Photos Really Can Be a Walk in the Park!

February 2, 2026

And in this case, they literally were.

This relaxed golden hour session took place at the Guelph Arboretum, a favourite spot for family photos in the Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo area. I was photographing my friend Michelle’s family (yes, that Michelle from Elle Chic Photography), including her husband’s parents, his sister and her partner, and Michelle’s kids too. I’ve had the joy of watching them grow up behind my lens, which always makes sessions like this extra special.

No pressure. No rushing. Just good light, good people, and a lot of “wait … that was actually fun!”

Why This Location Works So Well

The Arboretum naturally sets a relaxed tone. Quiet paths, tall trees, beautiful greenery, and that soft golden hour glow help everyone feel at ease — even the people who show up saying they’re “only here for the group photo.”

It’s one of my go-to locations for outdoor family photos because it gives us space to move, chat, and let moments unfold naturally.

A Little Planning (and a Good Playlist!)

A little planning ahead goes a long way. Before the session, we chat about the groupings that matter most so nothing feels rushed or forgotten.

And yes, a favourite playlist is always part of the plan. Music helps everyone loosen up, especially during extended family sessions. When people feel comfortable, the photos tend to follow.

Connection Over Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions about extended family photos is that they’re stressful. They don’t have to be.

These sessions are about connection, not perfection. We capture a few full group photos, break into smaller family combinations, and then let the in-between moments happen naturally. Hands held. Arms linked. Kids wandering ahead. Those are the moments families come back to again and again.

What They Wore (and Why It Works)

What everyone wore also helped keep things timeless. Neutrals, denim, light layers, and simple textures always work beautifully. Nothing matchy. Nothing trendy. Just comfortable, classic choices that keep the focus where it belongs — on the people.

Why These Memories Matter

Years from now, these photos won’t just show who was there on a summer evening at the Arboretum. They’ll bring back how it felt to be together.

If extended family photos have been sitting on your “someday” list, consider this your gentle nudge. With the right location, a little planning, and a calm, guided experience, it really can be a walk in the park.
