What to Wear to Your Spring or Summer Photoshoot

Simple Style Tips for Stress-Free, Frame-Worthy Photos

Let’s talk about dressing the part—without the stress!

So, you’ve booked a spring or summer session (yay!), and now the big question hits: “What should we wear?”

It’s one of the most common questions I get as a photographer, and I completely understand why—your outfit choice can either boost your confidence or make you feel self-conscious in front of the camera.

Whether you’re headed to the beach, twirling through a lavender field, or striking a pose in a sun-drenched glass greenhouse, what you wear plays a big part in setting the vibe of your photos. But don’t worry—I’ve got you. Let’s walk through a few style tips to keep things relaxed, flattering, and totally you.

1. Think Neutrals and Soft Pastels

Earthy neutrals, creamy whites, dusty blues, blush pinks, soft greens—these tones work beautifully in natural light and let the real star of the show (that’s you!) shine through. These colours complement any backdrop without clashing, especially in nature settings where bold colours can sometimes distract from the connection in the photo.

Bonus tip: Soft colours also look timeless—so your photos will still feel beautiful and fresh years from now. Future you will thank present you.

2. Avoid the Matchy-Matchy Trap

Coordinating? Yes. Copy-paste matching? Not so much. Instead of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans, think of your outfits like a collection—different pieces that flow together in colour and vibe. Choose 2–3 core tones and mix textures, patterns, and accessories within that palette.

What does coordinating actually look like? Imagine dad in cream coloured pants with a light linen shirt, mom in a flowy dress with hints of blue, daughter in a simple cream dress with blue accessories, and son in light pants with a textured neutral top. Everyone looks connected without looking identical.

This gives your group a polished look without feeling overly styled or forced. (Trust me, your photos will look way more modern and natural!)

3. Say No to Bold Patterns (and Logos)

A fun print can be great in moderation, but if everyone is sporting polka dots, stripes, or neon florals, it can get chaotic fast. The key is balance—keep bold patterns to one or two outfits max, and pair them with solids.

Small, subtle patterns like tiny dots, fine stripes, or delicate florals can work beautifully when balanced with solids. They add interest without overwhelming the frame.

Also: skip the logos, graphics, and neon. They tend to date your photos and pull focus away from what matters most—your connection.

And what about accessories? Simple is best—a delicate necklace, classic watch, or subtle earrings add personality without distraction. For families, coordinating accessories (like mom and daughter with similar bracelet styles) can create sweet visual connections.

4. Comfort is Key

If you’re fidgeting with a top that keeps slipping or shoes that are pinching, it’ll show. Choose clothing you feel comfortable and confident in—something that lets you move freely and be yourself. I promise you’ll look good when you feel good.

If your little ones are involved, think soft fabrics, stretchy waistbands, and maybe bring a backup outfit (or two). Let kids be kids—it makes for the sweetest, most genuine moments.

5. Let the Setting Inspire You

Beach session? Go barefoot, add a flowy dress or rolled-up linen pants. Textures like linen and cotton feel appropriately casual and catch the breeze beautifully.

Lavender field? Soft dresses, simple sandals, and natural fabrics look dreamy against the purple blooms. Consider cream, soft blue, or sage green to complement the lavender.

Greenhouse? Embrace light layers, subtle prints, and bring some texture (lace, linen, gauze) to play with the glassy reflections.
