What to Wear for Your Fall Photoshoot

What to wear for your fall photoshoot

As a Kitchener-Waterloo Family Photographer, one of the most common questions I hear is:

“What should we wear to our fall session?”

The leaves are crunching underfoot, pumpkin spice lattes are back in hand, and sweater weather has officially arrived. You’ve booked your fall photo session (yay!) and now it’s time to plan outfits that feel timeless, warm, and completely you.

Think of this as your fall style guide—a little inspiration to take the stress out of wardrobe planning and make sure your photos look just as amazing as the memories you’re making.

Neutrals: Your Fall Best Friend

Neutrals are the quiet heroes of fall wardrobes. They play well with every backdrop and let you be the focus of the photo. Think creamy whites, soft greys, oatmeal, taupe, and warm beiges.

The beauty of neutrals is that they never fight for attention. They bring a calm, timeless quality to your images and act as the glue that pulls your whole group’s look together. Pair them with rich fall tones like rust or burgundy and suddenly your outfit feels effortless but polished.

Embrace Autumn’s Colour Palette

If fall had a paint palette, it would be filled with rust, mustard, olive green, cream, camel, and burgundy. These tones blend beautifully with the golden leaves and soft light of the season.

The goal isn’t to match the backdrop. It’s to complement it. Imagine your family walking through a field of orange and gold; you’ll pop against the scenery while still looking like you belong in it.

Layer Up (It’s Not Just Practical, It’s Photogenic)

Fall weather can be unpredictable. One moment it’s sunny and warm, the next it’s chilly and breezy. Layers keep you comfortable and add visual interest to your photos.

Think cozy cardigans, chunky scarves, knit sweaters, and boots. Layers give movement and texture. A scarf catching the wind or a jacket casually draped over your shoulder adds depth and character to your gallery.

Coordinate Without Cloning

Gone are the days of everyone in identical jeans and white shirts. Instead, aim for a look that flows without being too matchy-matchy.

Choose two or three core tones, then mix and match within that palette. Picture it like a fall charcuterie board: a little variety, lots of texture, and everything working together without being identical.

What to Wear: Fall Outfit Inspiration

Here are three family outfit ideas that bring the tips above to life. Each palette works beautifully outdoors and photographs with warmth and ease.

Neutral Layers
Creams, taupes, and soft greys are always in style. Layered neutrals keep the focus on your family and photograph beautifully against any backdrop.

Rust & Khaki
Rich rust tones and classic khakis create a grounded, timeless look for fall. These shades pair beautifully with golden leaves and add warmth without overwhelming the photo.

Earthy Browns
Warm browns and soft creams give a natural, cozy feel. Perfect for woodsy backdrops, this palette blends seamlessly into the season while still standing out in photos.

Comfort = Confidence (Always)

If your outfit is itchy, tight, or fussy, it’ll show. You want to be comfortable enough to move, laugh, cuddle, and maybe even toss a few leaves in the air. (Yes, leaf tossing is absolutely encouraged.)

For kids, soft fabrics and easy layers are best. Bonus points if shoes can handle grass and crunchy leaves. And always have a backup outfit in case of spills or mud. Kids being kids makes for the sweetest, most authentic photos—let’s keep them comfy so those giggles come naturally.

Add Cozy Details

Accessories can double as props that bring warmth and storytelling to your photos. Think knit hats, a plaid blanket to snuggle under, or even a thermos of hot cocoa for your family to share. These extras look adorable, but they also give you something to do together. The result is genuine moments that feel as natural as they look.

Wrapping It Up: Fall Photos Made Simple

At the end of the day, what matters most is that your outfits feel like you. Fall sessions are all about warmth, connection, and capturing this fleeting, golden season.

And if you’re still torn between two sweaters, text me a photo. I genuinely love helping clients pick final outfits. (Yes, I’ll be that honest friend who says “go with the burgundy one.”)
